Token counts here are estimates based on the standard rule of thumb (≈4 characters or 0.75 words per token for English). Each provider's real tokenizer differs slightly, so treat the range as the safe planning number. Non-English text often uses more tokens per word.

What Is a Token?

AI models do not read words — they read tokens, small pieces of text. "Hello world" is 2 tokens; "unbelievable" can be 3–4. Pricing, context windows and rate limits are all measured in tokens, so knowing your token count tells you what a prompt will cost and whether it fits a model's context limit. As a rule: 1,000 tokens ≈ 750 words ≈ 4,000 characters of English text.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is this token counter?

It uses the standard English heuristic (≈4 characters or 0.75 words per token) and averages two methods, which lands within about ±10% of real tokenizers for English prose. For an exact count, use the provider's own tokenizer.

How many tokens is a 1,000-word article?

Roughly 1,300–1,400 tokens. At GPT-4o input prices that costs under half a cent to process.

Do images count as tokens?

Yes — vision models convert images into tokens too, typically a few hundred to over a thousand tokens per image depending on resolution. This counter covers text only.

Why do token counts matter?

API pricing, context-window limits and rate limits are all token-based. Counting tokens before you send a prompt prevents surprise bills and "context too long" errors.
